How chesed became charis
The Old Testament's chesed—steadfast covenant love—is among the richest words in all of Scripture. When Greek-speaking Jews translated it into the New Testament's charis (grace), something profound was carried forward. This journey follows that thread.

Chesed is among the most untranslatable words in the Hebrew Bible. English versions render it as steadfast love, lovingkindness, mercy, loyalty, and faithfulness—all inadequate because chesed combines them all. It is the love that belongs to a covenant relationship: the committed, unbreakable loyalty of a partner who will not let go regardless of what the other does.
