Obedience and Faithfulness
Hearing as heeding — the slow walk of a faithful life
In Hebrew, hearing and obeying are barely distinguishable — to truly hear is to heed. This journey explores the biblical vocabulary of obedience and faithfulness across both Testaments, uncovering why a faithful life is less about following rules and more about becoming the kind of person who loves what God loves and trusts what God says.
שָׁמַע — To Hear Is to Heed
to hear intelligently (often with implication of attention, obedience, etc.; causatively, to tell, etc.)
Also rendered: attentively, call together, carefully, certainly
The Hebrew shama means to hear, but in Hebrew thought, hearing always implies the possibility of response — you cannot truly hear without also heeding. When God calls Israel to 'Hear, O Israel,' it is not simply a request for attention but a summons to listen, understand, and act accordingly. Disobedience is, at root, a failure to really listen.
